Who We Are

Our Roots

We are from the  community and for the community.  Our board directors all live in, work in, or were raised in the Virginia Tidewater region, these deep ties are evident through our connections and commitments.  This is the place that our friends, families, Tribes and faith communities call home, and it is our greatest passion to serve them and our neighbors.

Community Outreach

We strive to connect with local community members and organizations in an ever expanding effort to create a stable and reliable network of food and friends

Empowering People

Through free and accessible educational programming and hands on support, we can offer real foundational change.  Charity based solutions are often not sustainable once the leaders move on, but teachers leave behind problem solvers.

Advocacy

We believe successful community growth is fostered from within, but we also understand the "privilege imperative": As leaders, we are obligated to stand up and speak on behalf of those who are not yet able to speak for themselves.

”So many of the answers to the questions of social justice related to crime, health, income disparity, the environment, and even racial equity can all be traced back to food justice. Inherent to Food sovereignty is: Equitable access to healthy food, decommodification of nutrition, community and land connections, cultural restoration and the revitalization of communities through self-determination.”

-Jay Grebe, Just Harvest, Director and co-founder

Donations made to Just Harvest are always used to advance our mission and support the communities we serve.  This might mean funding for educational workshops, resources for our community gardens, or even to cover the cost printer ink and paper clips we use while completing the less exciting parts of our work.  As a nonprofit organization, our funding is exclusively used for educational and charitable purposes, in alignment with our mission.

Mission Statement:  The mission of Just Harvest is to promote food sovereignty in Indigenous, Black and other marginalized communities, create sustainable food infrastructures within communities, and reduce the social and economic impacts of hunger.
